ABOUT QATAR
Pride on being the fastest growing economy and one having of the highest ranking GDP per capita (PPP) in the world, Qatar is also known to be one of the most important oil and gas producers.
Location & Geography: The State of Qatar is a peninsula located amid the western coast of the Arabian Gulf. The peninsular is approximately 100km across and extends 200km into the Gulf. Qatar includes several islands the largest of which are, Halul, Shraouh and Al-Asshat, and shares its southern border with Saudi Arabia and a maritime border Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Iran.
The People: With a population of over 2.5 million living in Qatar, more than half lives in the capital city, Doha, and the majority of population are Muslim. Qatar is an Islamic country whose law and customs comply with the Sharia Law but also respects other religions as it has attracted a large of number of expatriates and developed a cosmopolitan population over the years.
The Language: The official language is Arabic; however, English is widely spoken and understood.
Climate: Qatar has a desert climate with year-round sunshine, hot summers and mild winters. Mean monthly temperatures range from 17°C in January to 36°C in July, sometimes reaching highs of 40°C+ during the summer. Rain is infrequent, falling in brief showers mainly in winter.
Currency: The monetary unit of Qatar is the riyal (abbreviated to QR or QAR). The exchange rate is fixed at US$1=QR3.64. There are no foreign exchange controls. ATMs can be found in many locations and most shops and restaurants accept major credit cards.
Local Time & Business Hours: Qatar local time is GMT +3 hours, and it does not change during winter/summer.
Culture & Attire: Courtesy and hospitality are virtues that are highly appreciated and respected in the Arab world even though Qatar has an open-minded attitude towards multiculturalism. A visitor or resident in Qatar is required to observe certain ethics and social codes of conduct.
Travel Visa: Thanks to a host of visa facilitation measures, Qatar is now the most open country in the Middle East. Visitors from all around the world can now enter Qatar either visa free, or by filling out simple online applications, depending on the passport they carry.
